The perfect landscape
نویسنده
چکیده
The “perfect storm” metaphor describes the improbable coincidence of several different forces or factors to produce an unusual outcome. The perfect landscape is conceptualized as a result of the combined, interacting effects of multiple environmental controls and forcings to produce an outcome that is highly improbable, in the sense of the likelihood of duplication at any other place or time. Geomorphic systems have multiple environmental controls and forcings, and degrees of freedom in responding to them. This allows for many possible landscapes and system states. Further, some controls and forcings are causally contingent. These contingencies are specific to time and place. Dynamical instability in many geomorphic systems creates and enhances some of this contingency by causing the effects of minor initial variations and small disturbances to persist, and grow disproportionately large, over time. The joint probability of any particular set of global controls is low, as the individual probabilities are <1, and the probability of any set of local, contingent controls is even lower. Thus, the probability of existence of any landscape or earth surface system state at a particular place and time is negligibly small: all landscapes are perfect. Recognition of the perfection of landscapes leads away from a worldview holding that landforms and landscapes are the inevitable outcomes of deterministic laws, such that only one outcome is possible for a given set of laws and initial conditions. A perfect landscape perspective leads toward a worldview that landforms and landscapes are circumstantial, contingent results of deterministic laws operating in a specific environmental context, such that multiple outcomes are possible. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Urban-Historical Landscape Analysis on the Basis of Mental Perceptions Case Study: Tajrish Neighborhood
Despite the close affinity between collective memory and urban structures as the relationship between what is hidden and what is visible; rapid changes throughout the city have caused a disconnection between integrated memories and landscape cohesion. As a context for memories, the historical urban landscape proves to be valuable. The present research seeks to identify elements and signs in urb...

Adverse changes in rangeland vegetation can be considered as one of the criteria for land degradation. Some of these changes can be evaluated through monitoring the spatial changes of landscape parameters. This study aimed to investigate the landscape changes in Kezab rangelands of Yazd province, central Iran. Landsat satellite images of 1990, 2002, and 2013, and landscape metrics including Tot...

The urban fringe which can be seen as a special form of regional ecosystems with a spatial structure gradually from urban to rural areas of transition, has strong heterogeneity and is typical of ecologically sensitive areas. The expansion of city caused wide attention to the landscape effect of the changes. With the help of GIS, we got landscape pattern changes before and after town planning of...

Water as one of the most essential natural elements of landscape and consequently urban landscape from yesterday till today has had a great impact on the formation and effectiveness of urban spaces and its various effects have always stimulated human tendency towards beauty. It should be noted that the existential values of water are not merely aesthetic, rather it goes back to the deepest an...
متن کاملDynamic Fitness Landscapes in Molecular Evolution
We study self-replicating molecules under externally varying conditions. Changing conditions such as temperature variations and/or alterations in the environment’s resource composition lead to both non-constant replication and decay rates of the molecules. In general, therefore, molecular evolution takes place in a dynamic rather than a static fitness landscape. We incorporate dynamic replicati...
